Without question you prepare your home and family for hurricane season.  You buy extra water, board up your windows and plan your evacuation route, but what have you done to prepare your business in the case of a disruption caused by a major hurricane?

Some statistics claim that nearly 80% of businesses which experience mission-critical system outages longer than ten days fail within eighteen months.  Looking at this in the context of the days or even weeks of power outages associated with hurricane Ike, businesses located in costal Texas are starting to take note.

There are four main areas you should focus on when preparing your business for hurricane season.

Insurance: Make sure your policy is up to date and provides you the coverage you’ll need to recover in the event of flooding, rain/wind damage, and interruption of business.

Emergency Preparedness Plan: Write a plan detailing the responsibilities of each employee in the case of a hurricane.  If you have any physical tasks (boarding windows, etc.) you should include these tasks in your plan as well.  You should execute this plan well in advance of an approaching hurricane. As the hurricane approaches your employees will need time to take care of their families.

Document Storage: If you store a lot of paper documents, you should consider housing them with a document storage provider, investing in water resistant file cabinets, or converting your documents into digital format and then backing those documents up with a disaster recovery solution.

Disaster Recovery: If your mission critical infrastructure like file servers, application servers, email servers and communication equipment are at risk during a hurricane you should take measures now to make sure you’ll continue to have access to these resources even if your primary equipment is destroyed.

Stephen C. Sweeney, chief operating officer of RSA Corp, a leading provider of disaster recovery solutions says “Our clients look at disaster recovery solutions as a way to protect their business and prevent losses from operational downtime.  The hourly cost of downtime can be staggering, so investing in disaster recovery is a way of avoiding those costs”.

Preparing your business for hurricane season is about making sure your can continue your operations even in the event of the worst case scenario.  Plan ahead to make sure you will have access to your mission critical data, systems, and documents in case your business if affected by the next hurricane to hit Texas.
